What treatment options are available for Chronic Dry Eye?

For most people with occasional or mild dry eye symptoms, it’s enough to regularly use over-the-counter eyedrops (artificial tears). If your symptoms are persistent and more serious, you have other options, including treatments such as: LipiFlow and IPL.
(add a break so it’s easier to read)
What you do depends on what’s causing your dry eyes. Some treatments focus on reversing or managing a condition or factor that’s causing your dry eyes. Other treatments can improve your tear quality or stop your tears from quickly draining away from your eyes.

Chronic Dry Eye

Tear production may be inadequate for a variety of reasons.

Georgia Ophthalmologists can determine the cause of your Chronic Dry Eye and determine a course of treatment to restore your eye comfort.

Scientists used to think dry eye was caused by not making enough tears. Today, we know it’s more complicated than that. Dry eye is a disease of not just tear quantity, but also tear quality. Healthy tears help lubricate, heal, and protect the surface of the eye. But when you have poor-quality tears, they can contribute to inflammation.
Scientists believe that inflammation on the surface of the eye may be a key factor in causing dry eye. Inflammation is typically an immune system response to stress, irritation, bacteria, toxins, or any of a number of causes.

You may experience dry eyes in certain situations, such as on an airplane, in an air-conditioned room, while riding a bike or after looking at a computer screen for a few hours. That kind of stress can lead to inflammation on the surface of your eyes, which can lead to more stress. The cycle can go on and on. And your dry eye symptoms can get worse. Chronic Dry Eye usually affects both eyes.

Treatments for dry eyes may make you more comfortable. These treatments can include lifestyle changes, eyedrops or a procedure. You’ll likely need to take these measures indefinitely to control the symptoms of dry eyes.

1FREE CONSULTATION

During your consultation, your ophthalmologist will perform a complete eye examination that includes a thorough medical history. Your ophthalmologist will then decide what course of treatment is recommended.

2TREATMENT ALTERNATIVES

There are several treatment options for Chronic Dry Eye, depending on the source of the condition.
Punctal Occlusion can be used to permanently or temporarily close off your tear drainage channels, allowing you to retain your own natural tears, without the need for eye drops.
Intense Pulsed Light Therapy (IPL) is a simple and comfortable treatment that has been shown to help relieve dry eye symptoms, particularly when associated with congestion of eyelid glands (Meibomian gland dysfunction).
LipiFlow (IPL) is a thermal pulsation system developed to treat evaporative dry eye by unblocking the Meibomian Glands which produce the lipid (oil) layer of our tear film.

• If you have an eyelid condition, such as out-turning lids (ectropion), your doctor may refer you to Georgia Ophthalmologists’ oculoplastic surgeon, Dr. Eric Baylin, who specializes in plastic surgery of the eyelids. (In January, this will change to Dr. Kim)

During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss which treatment option is best for you.
