LASIK, commonly referred to simply as laser eye surgery, is a type of refractive surgery for the correction of myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. LASIK is an outpatient procedure performed by a trained ophthalmologist using a laser. This laser is used to reshape the cornea (the front part of the eye) in order to improve visual acuity (the clearness and sharpness of the image that you see). LASIK is similar to other surgical corrective procedures such as photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), (also called ASA, Advanced Surface Ablation) but provides benefits such as reduced pain and quicker recovery.
